In the lead-up to the global Engendering Empowerment: Education and Equality conference now under way in Dakar, Senegal, the United Nations Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) has developed a series of web profiles called Leaders for Education. The series aims to raise awareness about girls' education and gender equality, highlighting many of the issues that are being discussed by UNGEI partners in Senegal. Leaders for Education features interviews with global leaders from various sectors including government, sport, business and civil society who have contributed to progress on girls education and gender equality, or whose personal stories are sources of inspiration to advocates of quality education for all. The voices featured in the series are diverse but they all agree on one key point: the power of education to transform the lives of children, their communities and the world at large. Sergio Ramos in Senegal with UNICEF [Official]

Hi 5 for world champion Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) on doing this great charity mission for Unicef. Sergio Ramos visited children in Senegal just days after becoming a champion at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He visited a rural community health centre outside Dakar that focuses on improving the nutrition of mothers and their children. He assisted in weighing a baby girl at a health post in the village of Keur Seydou, These routine check-ups are crucial for monitoring the growth of local children to detect signs of malnutrition. In a country where 17 per cent of children under five years of age are chronically undernourished, such inventions are vital. By being a part of the process Mr. Ramos gained an understanding of how UNICEF and its partners reach vulnerable children. SOUNDBITE: "If there is something to be thankful for, it is the many NGO's, but above all, UNICEF, who is doing a wonderful job in every project; not only with soccer, but with child nutrition and with the individual education of each child in Senegal." A3D Salem to Senegal - Helping Children

Education is power. Help a child in need. Over the past 4 years, the African Development through Drum and Dance (A3D) organizations mission to act locally, support globally has been achieved through various humanitarian projects related to education, both domestically and abroad. From our participation with the City of Salems Save of School initiative to providing computers and sewing machines to schools in Senegal; A3D gives children the tools to help shape the future of their communities and cultures. Our global project for 2008-2009 is to raise money to purchase desks and chairs for the AEDEC School located in Dakar Senegal. A $60 donation will provide desks and chairs for 4 children. 20 desks complete a classroom. Many of the students in Senegal do not have adequate desks and chairs in which to learn, let alone books or supplies. As a result many leave school to work before they received the education they need to overcome the challenges of poverty. [ voir sur Youtube.com ]
