U.S. pressure leads to ban on beggars in Senegal (AP) +Senegal ...

Senegal’s penal code outlawed begging years ago, but officials say they recently felt pressure to impose the law because the U.S. has threatened to cut off aid if Senegal does not address human trafficking. Although they say numerous other donor countries and the World Bank have also pushed Senegal to address child begging, a letter from the [suite...]

Senegal draws tourists with sun, sea and sex - All West Africa News
DAKAR, Senegal — Women — often white, European and “of a certain age” — flock solo to Senegal’s shores year-round for what one hotel manager called “the three ‘S’s: sun, sea and sex.” The growth of Senegal’s female sex tourism has its roots in poverty and the lack of jobs for the country’s young men. Senegal’s unemployment for youths is estimated at 30 percent, according to the International Labor Organization, and the average person in Senegal earns about $3 a day, according to the World Bank.“It’s a question of survival. Life is hard. If I didn’t have these [suite...]

Born to a family of entrepreneurs in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on the coast of West Africa, Mendy credits her parents for encouraging her endeavors. “The spread of entrepreneurship is so in me that I always knew that I would branch out on my own,’’ she says. Both of her parents had side businesses in addition to their regular jobs, and Mendy and her five siblings, who all live in France, are following that path. “I grew up seeing that, so it was very easy for me to do,’’ she says, although she acknowledges that “easy’’ isn’t the best description for what she’s doing [suite...]

KO In Senegal: To Turkey and Back
Before the trip I had to do some office work in Dakar so that's how I spent the day before. My flight was at noon which is an odd time for flights out of Dakar (normally flights leave between 10pm-5am) so the airport was really empty. While waiting to board I met a nice Egyptian man who has a daughter my age. He's working in The Gambia and only gets to go home to Egypt once a year, he had to fly through Istanbul to get home but he was really excited. I also met a nice family from Burkina Faso who lives in Dakar and was going to turkey on vacation. The Dakar-Istanbul flight is the farthest [suite...]

2010 Senegal Explorer
Friday and Saturday found us recovering from jet lag at Club Calao, a beach hotel on the north shore of the Dakar peninsula. Saturday afternoon we took a ferry packed with local school children to the notoriously famous Goree Island, the departure point for over 20 million African slaves during three centuries of injustice. We toured the former installations with our informative guide Ali and learned about the abhorrent conditions under which these people were forced to live, but also were able to meet local artists who lifted our spirits and sent us away with some fabulous [suite...]
