Surprising Senegal - Budget Travel

Tourists use Dakar as a base, and cheap but modern hotels in the city center are not hard to fine. Try the four-star Hotel la Croix Sud (20 Avenue Albert Sarraut, +221/889-7878; lacroixdusud.net), a classy and chic hotel with renovated rooms with TV, private baths, and a sophisticated lounge in a 1951 building, in the center of Dakar near the main plaza of the city, Place D'Independence. Smart rooms start at a cool $108. A more simple option is the L'Oceanic Hotel (5 rue de Thann; +221/822-2044) near the main market in Dakar. It's popular with French tourists, has a cozy patio bar, and rooms [suite...]

Damien Masterson » Blog Archive » Live from DAKAR - 3/10

Not too far from Timbuktu… Folks, the last year has been a whirlwind of activity, much of it centered around the African continent. Since my last update, I have returned to West Africa, spending a couple of weeks in Dakar, then a month in Abidjan, and now I’m back in the D-a-k-a-r. For those of you that have called my cell phone and gotten my voice recording, I say that I am out of the country “indefinitely”… My goal here in Dakar is to set up a small rehearsal/recording studio that I can use to produce a couple of albums, and to rent out at affordable rates to others. My work [suite...]

Dakar is NOT Senegal

After spending the night having an awesome campfire in a friends’ village we all headed to the beach – where we used to go when we were in training! We spend the night in really cute huts that were Senegalese but clean and adorable. And spent 2 days on the beach…before we left we visited our host families from training and ate at my favorite Senegalese burger shack JNext we headed on over to training. We were supposed to stay with new host families but after a few days the training staff let us stay at the center – basically this means we got more time to hang out with other Americans [suite...]

KO In Senegal: To Turkey and Back

Before the trip I had to do some office work in Dakar so that's how I spent the day before. My flight was at noon which is an odd time for flights out of Dakar (normally flights leave between 10pm-5am) so the airport was really empty. While waiting to board I met a nice Egyptian man who has a daughter my age. He's working in The Gambia and only gets to go home to Egypt once a year, he had to fly through Istanbul to get home but he was really excited. I also met a nice family from Burkina Faso who lives in Dakar and was going to turkey on vacation. The Dakar-Istanbul flight is the farthest [suite...]

Bamako-Dakar express

I got to Dakar from Bamako by bus. The bus is cheaper than flying, but this is not why I chose to travel by land. I decided to bus down to Dakar mainly because the physician I was working with in Bamako told me that on the road you get to look at the villages, meet people at the stops and cross the entire length of Senegal. Flying is fast, impersonal and it lacks the authentic feeling of travelling through space and crossing borders. I listened to him, and felt suddenly adventurous. I was ready to depart and arrive to the most western point of the African continent; pointe des Almadies in [suite...]

King Cash Grocery Store - Dakar | Reviews | A Few Words

Grocery shopping in Dakar, Senegal can be fairly expensive and the products one finds are limited. Today, I went to a grocery store called King Cash and left with many items Casino does not carry. King Cash is the equivalent of a Sam’s Club in Dakar. You even have to purchase many of the items in bulk. An example, is cereal or cake mix you have to buy three boxes. The amounts, one must purchase, changes per item. Prices and selection make this a store a necessity to visit by any expatriate living and working in Dakar. Prices are a welcome change from what occupy Casino’s shelves. Just a [suite...]

So, as many of you know I (joe) have spent the last two months studying for the GMAT, the graduate business school entrance exam. I was scheduled to take the exam at the nearest testing facility which is in Dakar, Senegal (about 1000 miles from where I live in Mali) on October 7th, but when I arrived at the testing center I was told that the computer system had crashed and I could not take the test. Well luckily I was going to be in Dakar for eight days so I rescheduled the exam for the following Wednesday (at the Dakar testing facility this exam is only offered on Wednesdays). For some time it was public that there were two hypotheses too strong for the Dakar 2011 - or a return to Africa, through Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, or stay in Argentina and Chile. But as noted above the recent events should be very confused in this equation. "South America" has to mourn the tragic earthquake in Chile, which has claimed hundreds of lives and left the country in chaos, with widespread destruction of public and private property, infrastructure etc. This country now faces a lengthy and costly reconstruction process, so it is certainly easier to ensure the 7 million of Euros that [suite...]

Album five, Bitte Orca (Domino), with its more settled line-up, has been acclaimed as the most complete effort to date, the Dirty Projectors at their most seductive and elusive. The band reference hip-hop and heavy rock, pop and pure imagination. Longstreth’s falsetto is unmistakable; a sign of the breath of the Projectors’ appeal is that their Stillness Is the Move – a slice of this avant-pop – was covered by Solange Knowles, bringing this gem to a whole new audience. ‘Utterly listenable … this is art-pop in which the words on either side of the hyphen are equally balanced’ [suite...]

Initially, Internet came to Senegal in the late 1980s. And the country furnished full Internet connectivity in 1996, creating a so-called mini-boom in information technology-based services in the country. The same year, mobile services were introduced and competition in that sub-sector has started since in 1999. At present, Internet service is widely available in the capital, Dakar, and other towns either for private subscription or through Senegal’s extensive network of “telecentres” and Internet cafes. BoggBlog: Part II: Dakar, Senegal

The Hotel Farid was great: quiet, clean, reasonably priced, centrally located in the downtown core to be convenient, had a bathtub, air conditioning and a television. Cons on Dakar: most of what I liked was what made it more western and less African: the European-style restaurants and residential neighbourhoods. The open markets were not my thing: they were immensely hectic. After all the warnings I had heard and read about, I also never felt completely comfortable and safe in Dakar, always being a bit wary, always looking over my shoulder a bit, and I could never afford to truly slow down, [suite...]
