Dakar West Africa, Dakar city, Dakar Senegal tourism
Dakar is one of the undiscovered pearls of West Africa, although you might know it best for the annual rally that it lends its name to. And just as the Paris-Dakar Rally is not just any conventional rally you might be used to following, Dakar is unlike any African experience you might have undertaken. Exuberant and vivacious, Dakar has burst into life ever since it cast off three centuries of French colonialism in 1960 and it is almost as if the city has been racing against time itself to make up for every lost moment it had to endure. Dakar is dragging Senegal screaming and dancing by the [suite...]

Tales from a Travel-loving Teaching Assistant: In love with Lisboa
A young couple also staying at our hostel joined us (they teach at an international school in Dakar, Africa), and we all enjoyed our time at the small, smoke-free, local hot-spot to get good food and a good show. Shenning and I split a meal of fresh bacalhau (cod… what Portugal is famous for), shrimp, onions, potatoes, and peppers, all of which came in a copper pot and soaking in a simmering sauce. Oh, how I love good seafood. Portugal’s unique musical tradition is called fado, soulful folk music accompanied by twelve-string guitars. Throughout our meal, the lights dimmed for a few [suite...]

A Few Things You Should Know About Dakar...
NO TOILET PAPER: This is some general information on traveling in Sub-Saharan Africa, though if Dakar is your first stop, here is where you will learn. Instead of t.p. people use water. Definitely something to adjust to, though it will get you clean if you do the work. If you are going to be adventurous and not be handicapped with a roll of t.p. everywhere you go, rolling with some hand sanitizer may not be a bad idea. 2. NO LEFT HAND: This may not apply to many of you, but it is relevant to me as I am one of the special ones, aka, lefthanded. Here in Senegal, lefthandedness does not exist. [suite...]

Dakar back to Africa 'a 50:50 chance' | Hell for Leather
According to helicopter tow truck operator and Dakar race director Etienne Lavigne, the epic race stands “a 50:50 chance” of returning to Africa next year, although this time around, it could be through relatively terrorist free countries like Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Yeah, that doesn’t sound much safer than west Africa to us either, but a return to the Dakar’s spiritual home does appear to hold significant appeal to the race’s organizers. > The current route through Argentina and Chile has proved surprisingly successful for the last two years, not only for its political ease and [suite...]
