The Dakar Rally has been a successful event for Volkswagen with a 1-2 finish on the final stage of the arduous event. Giniel de Villiers’ stage wins-his fourth and Volkswagen’s 10th from the 14 stages-underlined the speed and dominance of the TDI powered Race Touareg 2. It was Volkswagen’s team that led the first eight days of the Dakar Rally but was cut short when the team encountered engine problems. Volkswagen’s team did not elaborate on the problem, so it’s not really clear what goes wrong with the engine. It should be noted that the German automaker is famous for creating the [suite...]

BuzzR » Le rally Paris-Dakar

Dakar West Africa, Dakar city, Dakar Senegal tourism

Dakar is one of the undiscovered pearls of West Africa, although you might know it best for the annual rally that it lends its name to. And just as the Paris-Dakar Rally is not just any conventional rally you might be used to following, Dakar is unlike any African experience you might have undertaken. Exuberant and vivacious, Dakar has burst into life ever since it cast off three centuries of French colonialism in 1960 and it is almost as if the city has been racing against time itself to make up for every lost moment it had to endure. Dakar is dragging Senegal screaming and dancing by the [suite...]

The seven stages in as many days in Chile and the ubiquitous Atacama Desert form the heart of the Dakar Rally. The world’s driest region, 100 times drier than Death Valley sets the scene for four stages. From Copiapó via Antofagasta to Iquique and back again – the Great North, a plateau zone with the saltpetre-rich boulder and stone desert, is the most demanding part of the “Dakar” from the technological and sporting aspects. Iquique, the most northern point of the rally and popular holiday resort for surfers owes its pleasant climate and high humidity, in contrast to the weather [suite...]

Volkswagen introduces Race Touareg 3 ahead of 2011 Dakar - The ...

The legendary Dakar Rally really is misnamed. While the event was born as the Paris-Dakar Rally in the mid-‘70s, its history has been sketchy to say the least. Different routes, different starting points, but one thing was always for certain: the rally started in Europe and finished in Africa. That is until 2008, when terrorist threats forced its cancelation. Through some herculean efforts, the race was reborn in South America, but retains the Dakar name for recognition. Some competitors and enthusiasts claim that the Dakar has lost some of its magic, but there’s still enough popularity [suite...]

Being the country with the biggest off-road sections of the rally raid, Chile is – indeed – quite concerned by the Dakar crossing its territory, whilst the part of the rally taking place in Argentina is mainly happening on existing trails and tracks. Indeed, after a first reconnaissance phase in April aimed at producing a first draft route for the 2011 rally raid, David Castera handed in the said draft in May to two governmental bodies for them to produce a [suite...]
